Family searches for answers after mom hit and killed

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA)– A family says they’re still in shock after their loved one was hit and killed. Police say the driver was drunk. We spoke with Summer Howell, the victim’s step-sister. She says the suspect is no stranger to the family. “Her and him had been in a relationship for almost three years on and off,” says Howell.

Police say the accident happened Saturday morning near Greenhill Drive and Sadowski Court. They say 23-year-old Brittany Shelton was hit by a pick up truck. She died at the scene. Sidney Flinn was charged with aggravated dui in connection with her death.

“I’m very upset, very confused, lost. That’s a sister like my best friend,’ said Howell. Shelton was a mother. Her family says she has a son who will be turning five this week. Hearts are heavy as the family tries to cope with her death. “Her mother’s currently undergoing a heart transplant soon. Her heart is only working at 20 percent. Her brother Brandon Hopkins died three years ago in the same month and he was 21 so 3 years apart in the same month is really killing her mom,” said Howell.

Howell says the family has questions, and they’re hoping what the investigation reveals can give them some peace of mind.
