SANGAMON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Authorities are warning people of a scam involving the use of the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office.

People are being told “Mike Walton” from the SCSO Records Division is soliciting money and gift cards. He legitimizes the call telling people to Google a phone number which is actually the non-emergency number for the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office does employ a Mike Walton, but it emphasizes to citizens, it never solicits money.

The call is a scam called spoofing  in which the caller impersonates someone else by falsifying the number appearing on caller ID. The person can make any phone number appear creating the appearance of legitimacy.

Anyone who’s been a victim of this scam is asked to call the sheriff’s office.
