Fire destroys church in Douglas County

Local News

CHESTERVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Crews were called to the Sunnyside Mennonite Church early Friday morning for a fire.

The fire chief said they got the call around 2 a.m.. He believed it started on the north end and spread. With the heavy flames and smoke, they let it burn out to make clean-up easier.

The congregation is made of 150 members.

“This is not the church,” said Church Pastor Larry Rocke. “What you see is a building that has burned and collapsed, but the church is still alive and we are going to rise up.”

They are still investigating an exact cause with the fire marshal.
