Driver speeding in deadly accident

SANGAMON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — The name of a driver killed in an accident Monday has been released.

Coroner Cinda Edwards says 44-year old Mark Heaton, of Springfield, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident on I-55, about 1:15 pm.

Authorities say Heaton was speeding southbound when he lost control of his vehicle, crossed the median and struck a bridge on the other side. The vehicle then traveled into the path of an oncoming car.  

The driver and passenger in the second car were not hurt.

SANGAMON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — A Springfield man died after an accident. It happened about noon, on I-55, near Pawnee, about ten miles south of the city.

Authorities say the 44-year old was speeding southbound when he lost control of his vehicle, crossed the median and struck a bridge on the other side. His vehicle then traveled into the path of an oncoming truck.

The victim was not wearing a seatbelt. Two people in the second car, from Kinnett, Mo., were wearing seatbelts. They were not hurt.

The accident is under investigation.
