CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — Coles County Dragway will be getting a massive makeover.
One of the racers started a fundraiser to repave the track. In just a few weeks, they raised more than their goal of $30,000.
The track opened in 1966 and the original asphalt is wearing away. The track owner says drag racers are like family and that’s how they were able to make this fundraiser happen.
Rob Viehland says, “Without a good racing surface, the high horse powered cars can’t make it down the track. Now they’re going to. What that means is bigger car counts, and that means more people. The more people we get the more money we can make to improve this place.”
The money will pay to resurface and widen the first half of the track. They hope to start construction in the next week.
There’s still time left for the fundraiser. If they raise more money they can pay to resurface the entire track.
