CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — They say they had plans in place before Hurricane Harvey made landfall.
Now, there are about 80 Red Cross volunteers from Illinois who are helping with the efforts in Texas.
Regional volunteers will link up with their national counterparts in Houston.
There are about 45 Red Cross shelters in Texas, and that’s where the work begins.
“They are assigned to particular shelter work, they may be doing more logistics now that the waters are receding, and how we’re going to be meeting the needs of the communities and the families that are impacted. so it’s a village that comes together to begin to do the work that needs to be done to help those impacted.”
As time goes on and Texas communities need less help from out of state Red Cross volunteers, they’ll begin to pull those Illinois volunteers back.
They say that won’t likely be anytime in the near future.
