COLES COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Authorities are still investigating a fatal Thanksgiving Day crash.

Police were looking for the driver after a report of domestic abuse at a motel right before the crash. The driver was eastbound on Route 16 when his car rolled several times crossing the Embarras River. It happened just two miles east of Charleston.

Both people were thrown from the car. Earlier that night, police say they received a call from the Suite Dreams Hotel. Dustin Sawyer and Bobbi Jeffers were fighting. The fight reportedly escalated and eventually Sawyer hit the manager who called police. When officers arrived, the couple had already left.

There was a rumor police were chasing the vehicle when the crash happened, but authorities say it’s not true; they never saw the car.

Sawyer was  pronounced dead at the hospital that night. Jeffers was flown to an Indiana hospital.
