MACON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Members of the sheriff’s office are being accused of misconduct. Now, legal action could be taken.
A court document states the state’s attorney’s office got an anonymous letter regarding foreclosure sales on homes the sheriff’s office conducts.
Anyone from the community is able to come and buy, but a state law prevents a sheriff or deputy from taking part.
The anonymous letter alleges a deputy made several purchases between December 2017 and July 2018. There are additional allegations other current and former employees were part of the purchases.
A special prosecutor was appointed to determine whether or not to pursue charges. Sheriff Antonio Brown says he’s not able to comment because it’s an ongoing investigation.
Illinois State Police are handling the investigation.
