UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS (WCIA) — You may have heard of police using bait cars to catch car thieves, but one police department is taking that idea one step further.

The UIPD used decoy tracking bikes during the fall semester, and they noticed an increase in crimes.

In total they received 48 reports of stolen bikes from September through December, which is a 300% increase from the same period in 2016.

Police say to use a quality lock and make sure it is wired through the main frame and the front wheel of your bike.
