Deadly train-car crash

Local News

DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — One man is dead after trying to beat a train across the tracks.

25-year-old Dennis Washington of Danville died after driving his car in front of an oncoming train. It happened around 2:00 pm at the railroad tracks on West Newell Road in Danville.

The Vermillion County Sheriff’s Office says Washington drove around the crossing gates and onto the tracks. He was found dead at the scene.

Witnesses told investigators the car was traveling westbound on Newell Road. As it approached the railroad crossing the warning lights were flashing, the gates were down, and several witnesses heard the train sounding its horn. That’s when Washington continued to drive around the gates and was struck by the freight train.

Nobody else was hurt and Washington was the only person in the car. Officials shut down the train tracks for hours to make sure no other trains came through. The tracks are now open.

The coroner has notified Washington’s family of what happened. The sheriff’s office is still investigating.
