CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — 19-year-old Brandon Smith was shot and later died at the hospital.
It happened in the 1200 block of McKinley Avenue in Champaign early Friday morning.
Champaign Police happened to be patrolling the area for another issue, so they were on the scene very quickly. Once they got there, they helped Smith until paramedics arrived.
Just a year ago another 19 year old was shot and killed on the same road. So, people in the area still worry that this happened.
“I‘ve never known Champaign not to catch a killer.”
Catching the person responsible for the death of Smith is what police plan to do.
“We continue to make some progress but we do not have anyone in custody as of yet,” says Lt. Dave Shaffer.
Smith was shot at the Providence at Sycamore Hill apartment complex.
Less than 24 hours after the crime, Champaign detectives say they’ve made some headway in the investigation, but they say there’s more that needs to be done.
“We recognize that we are still very early. We still have plenty of people we need to speak with and things that we need to do, so we still have a long road ahead of us,” says Lt. Shaffer.
Walking the road everyday is a woman who wants the violence to stop.
She didn’t want to give us her name.
What she did tell us: she grew up in Champaign County and she doesn’t remember the crime being this bad.
With another shooting on McKinley, she’s concerned for her safety, her family’s and children in the area.
“I was shaking like a leaf on a tree, but I can’t stop walking because that’s my transportation.”
Police say they have been able to curb some of the crime here.
“We’re making an impact. Obviously, incidents like last night continue to happen. It’s unfortunate when those do occur and it’s very traumatic for the family and for the folks that are involved, but we continue to press forward and find those individuals that are responsible and to bring them to the court so they can be held accountable for those actions,” says Lt. Shaffer.
Action is what this neighbor wants. She says if no one speaks up maybe surveillance video will help find the person responsible.
“Where is the cameras? Since nobody wants to run they mouth a camera will catch anybody.”
She hopes more people will help be a voice to lead the young people.
“I pray for all these families losing these kids because I got kids and I got grandchildren. It’s just bullets don’t got no name baby. They don’t have no identity. They don’t got nothing.”
Champaign Police have checked to see if there’s any surveillance video in the area. At this time, they’re not sure if there are any that would help them in the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Champaign Police. Crimestoppers will also take any tips anonymously.
