CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Social media can be a dangerous thing especially for young kids.
It can expose children to content they wouldn’t normally see and can cause significant distress.
This can be everything from photos to cyber bullying posts. It goes beyond that. We’ve reported on several online threats over the last few weeks. Some of the accounts made have been fake.
This all ties in with kids using social media as a platform for dangerous behavior. And it can open the doors to some scary situations.
Experts at Compass Counseling say, “It can expose them to a lot of things children should definitely not see especially pornographic images that people might send and we have enough of a problem with adults being sent these things that are unwarranted or unasked for imagine the same thing happening to a 10 year old or a 9 year old kids and these are conversations that should be happening with parents.”
Monitoring your child’s pages can be tricky. Counselors suggest keeping an eye on things at all times but don’t be intrusive unless there’s a concern.
