Damage to course won’t prevent plans to play

UNIVERSITYOF ILLINOIS (WCIA) — The area is still cleaning up after this week’s tornadoes. UI’s Golf Courses, in Savoy, were hit especially hard.

The storm knocked over more than 50-trees and temporarily shut down the Orange Course. It comes just before the UI Open which is this weekend.

The National Weather Service says winds ripped through the course at 80 – 90 miles per hour. Officials surveyed the damage Monday. They’re still counting downed trees.

The course manager says most damage was on the Orange Course which was closed until Tuesday. The goal was to open the front nine before Wednesday, and have the rest of the course open in the next few days.

The UI Open is still a go. The manager says he’s just not sure which course the tournament will be on. The Blue Course is still open and good to go, so golfers can play on that if need be.

The manager says he’s not sure how long the clean-up will take. After everything’s addressed, they’ll replace trees they lost.
