Customers benefit from automatic renewal

Local News

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — If you’ve ever had a late fee at the Champaign Public Library, not to worry.

Starting next month, they’ll automatically renew items for you. Eligible items which have already been checked out will be renewed up to 10 times. There’s no need to call or ask for it online.

About 150,000 items were borrowed from the library last month alone and they get a lot of calls to make repeat renewals. Library workers say this is a hassle-free way to deal with that.

Library services manager Kristina Hoerner says, “When someone calls you, there can be some anxiety on their end that ‘Oh, I forgot this item was due yesterday,’ or they went out of town and ‘We forgot to let you guys know we’d like to keep these items longer.’ This program will hopefully end that.”

There are a few exceptions: Items reserved for another customer, items already overdue, and e-content don’t apply. You’ll still get a reminder from the library three days before items are due.
