UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS (WCIA) — An associate professor is accused of stealing money by submitting false travel reimbursements.

Wai-Tat Fu is facing charges of theft and official misconduct. University officials say an internal audit shows the reimbursements added up to more than $16,000. Police say that money covered airfare so Fu could travel to conferences and some hotel expenses.

The reimbursements were submitted between November 2016 and September 2018.

Fu is currently on paid administrative leave. He’s expected to be arraigned on May 8.

The university released the following statement:

The State of Illinois has brought criminal charges against an associate professor, Wai-Tat Fu, based on allegations that he misappropriated over $16,000 through fraudulent or excess travel reimbursements. Dr. Fu was paid placed on administrative leave after inappropriate reimbursements were uncovered during an internal audit, and he will remain on paid leave until the matter is resolved.
