CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — If you’re a regular visitor to the courthouse, you may find yourself a little inconvenienced fairly soon.
The sheriff’s office is doing away with lockers inside the lobby. For years, people have used the lockers to store things restricted from the courthouse.
They’re especially popular for cellphones, but officials say it’s time to say goodbye. The biggest reason behind the change is a concern the lockers post a safety risk.
There has never been a screening process for what’s put into the lockers which puts everyone in the building at risk. Having the lockers also takes productivity away from the office.
In December, the department started keeping track of how much time was spent helping people with the lockers. It clocked in a 1.5 – 2 hours every day.
Officials hope people will make arrangements for their phones before leaving home. The lockers will be gone May 1.
