COLES COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Authorities are warning businesses to be on the lookout for counterfeit cash.
In Mattoon and Charleston people have been passing counterfeit $100 bills to purchase small items, then walking away with change in cash.
Investigators suggest businesses contact police immediately if a bill does not pass the pen-mark test. People trying to use those bills are welcome to await the arrival of police for the currency to be inspected.
If someone decides to leave the business instead, investigators suggest businesses try to get vehicle and license plate descriptions only if safe to do so.
Officials suggest people trying to use higher denominations to purchase items of small value could be suspicious but counterfeit cash of various denominations is showing up around the area.
