CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The city council will meet Tuesday evening to vote on expanding diversity incentive payments for city projects.

Right now the city only uses incentives in the public works department, which focuses on infrastructure and buildings.

The city launched this pilot program in 2013.

Champaign Public Works director Dennis Schmidt says a business qualifies for these payments if their workforce exceeds 15 percent.

If council approves this expansion, incentives would apply to female and minority-owned businesses, as well as others contracted by the city.
