CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The mayor and city council members might be getting raises.

A task force is recommending $500 per person, per year. The compensation task force was created to review salaries and make recommendations every six years.

The committee met in July and decided upon changes including raising the mayor’s and city council members’ salaries by $500, by 2021, but the council could opt to start doing it in 2019 for some.

The total raise would be about $4,000 and the money comes from the city’s General Operating Fund.

Right now, the mayor makes $35,000 a year and council members make $5,000 annually. The recommendation will be discussed at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Members don’t always vote to give themselves raises. The last time they met was in 2012 and all voted not to a $1,000 raise that year. The mayor’s salary would not have gone up regardless. The task force recommended keeping it at $35,000.
