CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Did you know local restaurants aren’t allowed to serve alcohol most hours of weekend brunch?
Tuesday night, the city council will vote whether to change that ordinance. It states restaurants can’t serve alcohol outside before 11 am Saturdays and noon Sundays.
Restaurant managers say enforcement of the rule didn’t really start until about a month ago. Before then, they would start serving alcohol as soon as they opened.
A new proposal would change the rule to be official. The current ordinance was adopted in the 90s before downtown had so many restaurants with outdoor dining space.
Owners and employees are the ones spearheading the rule change. They say it’s how they’ve worked for years without problems.
If the city council decides to change the rule, it would be effective immediately and restaurants could serve alcohol outdoors as soon as they open.
