Community overwhelms Kenlee’s Toy Drive

POTOMAC, Ill. (WCIA) — Just two years ago, this little girl was having open heart surgery. It’s why her family wanted to give back to the people who helped them during the hard time.

The family collected toys for kids in the hospital this year. They’re giving them to Lurie Children’s Hospital, in Chicago. They called it Kenlee’s Toy Drive.

She had surgery the first week she was born. Today, you’d never be able to tell she had a heart defect.

Two years ago, she spent all of December recovering in the hospital. It meant she couldn’t go home for Christmas and her two siblings were still in Potomac. While they were there, Lurie  Hospital collected toys and let her parents pick out presents for Kenlee and her siblings.

Her mom said it touched her so much, she wanted to give back to other families who go through the same thing. They weren’t expecting their entire community to pitch in like it did.

They collected more than 200 toys for Kenlee’s Toy Drive. They also got more than $200 in donations.

It was all shipped to the hospital Thursday morning for families to pick from for Christmas. The giving won’t stop this year. They plan on making Kenlee’s Toy Drive an annual event.
