Community mourns teenager killed in car accident

MONTICELLO, Ill. (WCIA) — A community is grieving after a teenager was killed.

17-year old Tori Lanter died in a car accident on I-72, Tuesday. It’s an unexpected loss and many are feeling it.

People are still learning about the tragedy. The city is a tight-knit community, so the news is making its way around and people are devastated.

As students were released from school, many of Tori’s friends said it’s a hard time for them.

School officials released the following statement:

We are saddened by the tragedy of her passing. We appreciate the love and support from surrounding school districts during this difficult time. Please keep Tori’s family and the Monticello High School family in your thoughts and prayers as we grieve this loss together.

A 20-year old man who was a passenger in the vehicle is hospitalized in critical condition. The accident is under investigation.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The name of a teen killed in an auto accident has been released.

Authorities say Tori Lanter, 17, of Monticello, was driving when her vehicle left the roadway, hit a guardrail, drove into oncoming traffic and hit another guardrail before rolling multiple times.

A 20-year old man who was a passenger in the vehicle is hospitalized in critical condition. Both were thrown from the vehicle. Authorities believe neither was wearing a seat belt.  

The coroner says Lanter died as a result of injuries received during the crash.

No autopsy was performed, but an inquest may be conducted at a later date. The accident is under investigation.  

Update: 9:30 am, 11/29/17, Wednesday

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — One person was killed and another is hospitalized after an accident which closed the interstate for about four hours.

A 17-year old female, from Monticello, who was driving, died from injuries sustained in the rollover crash. A 20-year old man, from Allerton, is in critical condition. Neither name has been released.

Authorities say the accident happened about 3:50 pm, Tuesday, on I-72, westbound, near the Rising Road overpass.

The vehicle, a 2005 Scion, was traveling eastbound when it left the roadway, struck the guardrail, crossed the center median and all westbound lanes before striking another guardrail and rolling multiple times.

Both people were ejected from the car. Officials say they don’t believe either person was wearing a seatbelt. The crash is under investigation.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A crash shut down part of an interstate Tuesday evening.

It happened on westbound I-72, about a mile west of the 57 interchange.

State police are calling it a “serious personal injury rollover.”

The westbound lanes were shut down for several hours.
