URBANA — Big changes are coming to the Sweet Corn Festival. Event coordinators say they’ve been brainstorming new ways to focus the event on local businesses and performers.
Changes include lower pricing for vendors; both food and craft. They’ll charge one flat rate to be part of the festival and they won’t take a percentage of sales.
They’re also incorporating downtown restaurants. Previously, you were only allowed to buy beer inside the festival grounds.
But now, if you buy a Sweet Corn Festival cup, you can purchase alcohol at any local business. The cup allows you to enter bars around town and go in-and-out of the festival at any time.
But, possibly the biggest change will be entertainment. The festival has been around since 1975. It’s had a headliner performance for the past four years, but now it’s out with the old and in with the new.
Event coordinators say they want to take advantage of all the local talent in town. To be a performer, the committee is now accepting applications.
The 42nd year of the festival takes place Labor Day Weekend, starting Friday, August 25.
