CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — Coles County is ranked as one of the highest food insecure counties in the region and the state according to EIU sociology associate professor Michael Gillespie.

He says 46.5% of all families with children are at risk, at any moment, of now knowing where their next meal will come from and 40% of students at EIU are at risk of food insecurity.

Volunteers stood outside in the cold Tuesday to collect money right next to campus to help the community. Not only did people donate money, but several dropped off boxes of food to fill the truck on site.
