Classes canceled after power outage

Local News

CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Hundreds lost power in Piatt and DeWitt counties when a truck crashed into a power line and snapped it in half. It happened about 9 am, Tuesday, on Route 48, north of Weldon.

The truck driver says he was trying to avoid an accident when a car pulled in front of him. No one was hurt

Cornbelt Power says about 700 of its members lost power. Deland-Weldon schools dismissed students at 10:15 am, because of the loss of power.

School officials say they had to make a decision quickly and call all parents and bus drivers back to pick up kids. By the time power came back on, students were already on their way out the doors.

Since power came back on, staff and teachers stayed at the school for professional development. The superintendent says evening activities for the district will still take place.
