City looks into food scrap recycling program

Local News

URBANA —  The city is looking into a food scrap recycling program.

They’re asking people if they’re interested, what their concerns are, and how much they’d be willing to pay for it. One of the options is to add it to the compost items that are already being recycled.

“We would work the scrap material into the leaf compost. but since its a different processing, we have to keep it off to the side until we get it processed and then we’ll mix it into our leaf process is what were learning.” said Kevin Sanderson, The Landscaping Recycling Center Supervisor.

It would work like a subscription program. You’d pay every month to compost food scraps. It would include, fruits, veggies, and egg shells, but not dairy, meat or bones.
