City leaders see progress; aim for more

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — City leaders say there has been progress in making public works jobs more diverse, but there’s still room for improvement.

Three years ago, the city council started an initiative to bring more minorities on board for public works projects. The goal was to have contractors make sure their staff was at least 18% minority.

The council says they’ve exceeded that goal. The problem is, when a subcontractor is needed, minorities have made up less than 2% of subcontracting jobs.

He says the hope is that when a subcontractor is needed for a project, contractors will reach out specifically to minority subcontractors.
