City could seek eminent domain

DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A possible eminent domain lawsuit could be in the works. The city may tear down the American Inn on East Main Street and turn it into a trailhead and green space.

It’s part of the East Main Street Corridor Project. If the motel is torn down, the workers at American Inn could lose their jobs and people who live at the motel long-term could be without a home.

“That’s what I’m scared of and we’re all scared of really to a certain extent. Where will we go? Where will we take our kids? At least here, we do have a roof over our heads, electricity, running water,” said Kenny Johnson, the manager of American Inn.

During the city council meeting Tuesday, council members may discuss whether or not they will move forward with acquiring the property.

If the council agrees to move forward with the plan, it could take several more months before anything actually happens to the motel.
