Chief supporter takes message to the streets

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS (WCIA) — One man is showing his support for Chief Illiniwek by placing a billboard right on campus. It’s not the first time attorney John Gadau has done this.

Gadau has had several billboards showing support for the chief before. His newest one is now on First and Springfield.

He says he had a hard time finding a billboard company which would do it. They didn’t want to upset the university, but he persisted because he said it needed to be done and believes the majority of the people are with him.

He says he was a football and basketball ticket holder for more than 40-years, but once they took the chief away and messed up some of his tickets, he decided to stop going.

He currently has a year lease on the board and says he might renew it.

Some UI trustees traveled to Oklahoma last month to meet with the Peoria tribe. In March, the tribe voted to keep Chief Illinwek retired.

The trustees said they were looking to show respect to the tribe’s new chief. They also discussed their partnership and how to improve research and scholarships for tribal students.
