URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Area officers arrested two men wanted for the murder of a Chicago mother who died shielding her 1-year old daughter from gunfire. It happened about 8:50 am, Tuesday, in the 1200-block of North Mason Avenue, on Chicago’s far West Side.

Chicago Police alerted the Urbana Police Department’s Street Crimes Task Force one of the suspects, Michael Washington, 39, had contacts in the area.

Authorities took Washington and Eric Adams, 23, into custody about 1:40 pm, Wednesday, in the 1000-block of Austin, without incident. Officials could not confirm if any weapons were recovered.

Investigators say both men were quickly extradited back to Chicago to appear in court at noon, Thursday, to face one felony count each of first degree murder.

Authorities say 24-year old Brittany Hill was holding her baby as she got out of her car when two men exited another vehicle and started shooting. Hill tried to shield herself and her daughter from the gunfire by taking cover behind a car. Hill sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Authorities say the shooting was not a random act and, while Hill is not affiliated with any gang, the shots were possibly targeting members of a group she was with.
