CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — County Recorder Mark Shelden warns residents about a mail scam. Property owners are getting a letter offering a copy of the deed to their home for $89.

Shelden says residents can get a copy of their deed from the recorder’s office for free. The mailing is from “Local Records Office,” in Pekin. The address is a mailbox in a UPS store.

Anyone receiving the mailing should disregard the offer.

Shelden says:

We want to stop people from falling for this scam. The individual who brought in the mailing was a senior citizen, so it’s possible they are targeting that age group. The appearance of the mailing is like a bill. The small print likely gives the scammers a loophole on violating the law but it’s clear they are trying to take advantage of people.
