CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Research from a UI professor suggests veterans in the community are not getting the care they need. The research also shows the people caring for them also need support.
Nationwide, there is about one caregiver for every four veterans. In Champaign County, there are about 9,000 veterans.
UI professor Sandraluz Lara-Cinisomo says it means both veterans and caregivers in the community are underserved. It also means funding is needed to make sure both are more supported.
This study involved unpaid caregivers of veterans. The focus was to practice mindfulness to reduce stress and anxiety. It also highlighted the importance of more services for the caregiver.
