Call for self-harm ends in fire/death

DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A man is dead after a late night fire. It happened about 11 pm, in the 300-block of Bradley.

Police responded for a call of a man who threatened to harm himself with a weapon. When authorities arrived to the second floor of the apartment, the man yelled he was going to kill himself.

Officials noticed smoke and fire in the windows, then heard what sounded like a gunshot. The man is believed to be a 19-year old. His identity has not yet been released.

Fire crews were on scene for more than three hours, being held back until it was determined there was no threat for firefighters.

Damage is estimated at $27,000. Eight families were displaced from Beeler Terrace; a Danville Housing Authority property. One firefighter was treated for heat and dehydration.
