CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A final decision was made on the Burnham Mansion: It will be demolished.
There was a last minute snag in the buying process for the lot it was expected to be moved to on the corner of Elm and Church.
The school board president says the buyer, Chris Enck, had until 5 pm, Monday, to try to come up with a backup plan. Enck wasn’t able to figure out a new angle of attack though. The school district is going to start planning the mansion’s demolition, but there is no set timetable.
The mansion was expected to be moved to the new lot, until this weekend. That’s when the buyer was told the bank needed more information about what would be done with the second half of the lot. It stalled the loan process and Enck would have needed someone to buy the new lot immediately or move the mansion first to a temporary lot.
All of this is to make way for Central High School’s expansion.
