Bookworms ditch cartoons for stories

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Some kids stepped away from morning cartoons to read a few books. People celebrated the 18th Annual Read Across America, at Lincoln Square Mall this weekend.

It always happens around this time of year, in honor Dr. Seuss’ birthday. About 45 community organizations helped out.

Children of all ages went to hear storytellers, do crafts and learn about the importance of reading.

“It’s almost surreal knowing just how many people are here and walking around and enjoying this event. It’s really cool. I’ve never really attended a Read Across America event before so this is so amazing to experience it and to help plan it at the same time.”

The turnout was greater than expected. Within two hours, more than 1,000 children participated.
