URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — A local landmark could be in store for a new future.
The Lincoln Landmark Hotel has been sitting vacant for years. Once again, it’s up for auction. City leaders hope someone can breathe new life into it.
It’s currently privately owned. The owner tried unsuccessfully to auction it off in December.
Earlier last year, city officials talked about turning it into a Hilton Boutique Hotel. That didn’t go through because the city would have had to borrow too much money to finance the project.
Mayor Diane Marlin says even though the city is not in charge of the process, they have supported the hotel’s sale since the beginning.
The hope is to buy and restore the hotel to attract visitors and draw them downtown. It would boost the city’s economy through the hotel-motel tax.
The auction started Tuesday and runs until Thursday.
