Another schedule change for high school football

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Weeks after a student in Champaign was killed, another football game has been changed; this time in Urbana.

Urbana High School moved two Friday games to Saturday for safety. Some say it’s inconvenient, but others say it could be for the best.

Forget about Friday Night Lights, Urbana High School’s Homecoming football game should be over before dark.

“I’ve got two daughters here at the school. They were complaining about the homecoming being moved up. They’re complaining they just wouldn’t have enough time.”

Despite the inconvenience, most parents agree.

“I completely understand, with the whole precaution thing. It is kind of scary right now.”

The decision comes two weeks after a 16-year old student from Champaign was shot and killed. It prompted Central High School to move two Friday games to Saturday as a precaution as well.

“That, as a parent, is terrifying.”

Sheri Williams is the PTA president for Champaign schools. She says recent events have taken her mind back to December when there was a shooting outside a Central-Danville basketball game.

“Especially with the Central game, that shows your student could be anywhere and we want to make sure they’re safe. This is the administration’s response to safeguard their students if we have to move up the time of a game.”

Williams says she’s happy to see schools taking action to prevent violence.

“The administration is doing the best they can. I think both districts are.”

Some parents agree, but say there’s always room for improvement.

“I think Saturday would have worked better, especially for the adults too.”

Police say they have more officers on hand when Urbana plays nearby rivals. They say, in general, policing in the daytime is easier because they can see what’s going on.

But, the school district makes decisions about officers at games. Urbana’s athletic director could not be reached for comment.

Urbana’s Homecoming parade is at 3 pm, next Friday, September 28. The game is at 5 pm. Students must present a photo ID to get a ticket. Anyone under 13 has to come with an adult.
