Administration changes in school district

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The school board held a special meeting about three former top administrators.

Sunday, in a special school board meeting, member made final decisions on superintendent Don Owen and assistant superintendent Kathy Barbour and Samuel Byndom.

All of them were put on leave in the fall. The school board meeting started at 1 pm with citizen statements but no one was there to speak.

Instead they went straight into their closed session which lasted about two hours. When they returned, the board voted to reassign the three administrators to licensed teaching positions.

Last year the three members were placed on leave.

The board explained why they chose to reassign Owen, Barbour, and Byndom.

“Instead, they are being reassigned and offered continued employment with the district as licensed teachers. This is because each of them possesses contractual continued employment with the district or tenure as it is commonly referred to as in Illinois,” John Dimit, Board Member.

The board says they will not discuss individual personnel matters but to maintain transparency they are making copies of the resolutions available for anyone who requests them.

The school district also voted to approve money for the a cappella groups from Urbana High School to go to New York. The board was challenged to raise $500 and it did. They are allowing the district to give $7,500 for the trip.
