3 teens charged; 1 adult sought in church vandalism

EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WCIA) — Three juveniles face charges and one adult is being sought in connection with the vandalism of a church.

It happened between 10:50 pm – 11:10 pm, Saturday, February 9, at St. Anthony Church, in the 400-block of North 3rd Street.

Security footage of the suspects showed three males and one female. Church leaders reported damaged items in the sanctuary and food strewn about the building. Surveillance video also showed one suspect trying multiple times to start a fire.

A 14-year old, from Altamont, is charged with attempted arson, burglary and criminal damage to a place of worship. A 16-year old, from Effingham, and a 17-year old, from Wheeler, were each charged with burglary and criminal damage to a place of worship.

The 14- and 17-year olds are being held in a juvenile detention center while the 16-year old was given a notice to appear and released to guardians.

A fourth suspect, an adult, is still being sought, but no other information was provided.
