DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A woman says she held her boyfriend in her arms after he was stabbed.
Police say a 15-year old girl may have been holding the knife. The 43-year old victim was stabbed on Campbell Lane, just after midnight early Tuesday. Investigators believe it all started with an argument.
Police are still looking for the suspect. People say the suspect just graduated 8th grade last week. Despite her age, those close to the victim hope to see the girl brought to justice.
Within the plain walls of the Fair Oaks Housing Complex, the most colorful collection is a set of flowers, bottles, and a coffee can. It’s not much, but it’s all that’s left.
“I don’t know what to say. I have just as many questions,” says Lewshawn Clark.
Clark says she’s the victim’s girlfriend of eight years. That came to an end with the start of an argument.
“He took his final breath because he was trying to break up a fight that started on a Friday,” says Clark.
She and investigators say tensions remained high. When officers arrived after the victim was stabbed Tuesday, investigators say people were trying to perform CPR.
“He died in my arms. I was trying to resuscitate this man myself,” says Clark. “People that do that type of stuff and get into it, they’re seeking attention. And my question is, young lady, what attention are you trying to get?”
Cheryl McIntire directs Big Brothers Big Sisters of Vermilion County.
“It’s very important to have programming in the community for children,” says McIntire.
This year, they saw a need to expand their Young Women Aware program. It’s open to girls in grades 5 – 12. Normally it runs four weeks. This will be the first summer it runs eight.
“They feel safe in terms of talking and confiding in us, and feel like they can just share what is going on in their life with us,” says McIntire.
But while programs may help prevent, they can’t change the past. For the other kids in the neighborhood, Clark says her message to them goes beyond flowers and bottles.
“Justice needs to be served and people need to understand that they need to just sit down and use some critical thinking around here before they act on stupidity,” she says.
Investigators haven’t said who the victim or the suspect are yet. An warrant has been issued for the 15-year old girl’s arrest.
