Library hosts domino chain record attempt

News

MAHOMET, Ill. (WCIA) — Children will attempt to form the longest book domino chain in the state this week.

The Mahomet Public Library wants to form a chain of at least 1,000 books. Library director John Howard said he is attempting to surpass the current state record of 950 books, set by the Farmington Public Library in 2018.

“I was the director in Farmington last year,” Howard said. “So I set the record and then I came here and said I want to set a bigger record.”

Howard came up with the idea for setting domino chain records in Illinois after learning about the Seattle Public Library’s world record, set in 2013 with 2,131 books.

The Mahomet Public Library will need to use a specific kind of book to attempt to break the state record.

“I can tell you it’s going to be almost all adult-fiction books,” he said. “It’s a certain shape of books, hardcover books, that works best as dominoes.”

All ages are welcome. The event is Friday, from 12:30 – 2 p.m.
