CHAMPAIGN — More than 800 students from Illinois and Indiana are competing to go to the national archery tournament.
23 schools, including Jefferson Middle school, brought their teams to compete in the Schwieghart Shootout Competition.
The tournament is split up into three divisions: elementary, middle school and high school.
But no matter their age, all students are aiming for the same target.
“My hope for the team is that we can go to nationals and win it. So last year we were 15th, year before 4th, so the goal in the next two years is to be in the top three,” said Jefferson head coach Jason Brown.
Right now archery in Illinois is a club sport and parents have to pay for the costs.
But because it’s becoming so popular, many hope it will soon be recognized by the IHSA as a sanctioned sport.
