URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — After a nationwide search, Urbana High School welcomes new leadership. The decision was announced Thursday afternoon during a special school board meeting.
Mitchell Berenson will serve as UHS’ new interim principal for the 2019 – 2020 school year. Berenson comes from a Lake Park high school district, just north of Chicago.
Berenson works as an assistant principal of student services. He was one of four candidates; none of the others were from Central Illinois.
Superintendent Jennifer Ivory-Tatum says Berenson stood out among the rest by holding several other leadership positions in schools. They’re excited about new ideas he will bring to improve academics and discipline throughout the district.
Berenson is serving as interim principal for now. Ivory-Tatum says the decision was made because he was just recently hired. They hope he will continue to serve for the entire school year, but once the spring semester comes, they’ll decide whether or not it will be necessary to start the search for another principal.
Berenson says, “In this field, you are always in a position to make a difference. I am excited to help the school district staff and Urbana community make a difference at Urbana High.”
