DIVERNON, Ill. (WCIA) — Both directions of Interstate 55 have reopened between mileposts 63 and 82, State Police officials have announced.

The highway was shut down Tuesday afternoon out of an abundance of caution due to high winds and low visibility caused by lingering dust being blown around. The closure came several hours after that same stretch of I-55 reopened following a 19-hour shutdown caused by Monday’s 72-vehicle pileup.

Seven people are confirmed dead as a result of that crash, up from the six that authorities initially confirmed dead.

DIVERNON, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois Department of Transportation has closed down Interstate 55 again.

Illinois State Police posted on their social media that while there are no crashes at this time, out of an abundance of caution, both ISP and Illinois Department of Transportation decided to close I-55 southbound and northbound between mileposts 63 and 82, the same stretch that was closed Monday, due to high winds and low visibility.

The National Weather Service has issued a dust storm warning for Montgomery County, as well as the southern parts of Sangamon, Christian, and Shelby counties. The warning is set to expire at 6:00 p.m. in Montgomery County and 4:15 p.m. for the other counties.

A blowing dust warning was issued by the NWS yesterday, it said to expect severely limited visibilities, in some places less than a quarter of a mile. Police said the dust was the cause of the massive Interstate 55 crash involving 72 vehicles and causing 6 deaths. Interstate 55 closed Monday around 11 a.m. and reopened Tuesday morning before 6 a.m.
