CHAMPAIGN — A local man, accused of shooting his wife in the back, was in court Thursday. Deresheo Carter is charged with aggravated battery with a firearm.
Police say the shooting happened Wednesday night in the 500-block of North James. Carter’s wife is in critical condition.
After the shooting, police say Carter fled the scene in his car and was involved in an accident involving two other cars at the intersection of Springfield and Neil. He reportedly then fled from the accident on foot before police caught up with him.
Prosecutors say Carter admitted shooting his wife, but says it was an accident. They say he told them he bought a rifle from someone in a parking lot earlier in the day and was playing with it during an argument. When his wife walked away, the gun went off.
Two children were home at the time, but neither was hurt. Carter faces up to 30-years in prison if convicted.

CHAMPAIGN — It was a chaotic night for police. They were spread out across the city investigating a shooting and a car accident.
Officers say one person was shot in the 500-block of North James Street around 6 pm. The victim was taken to the hospital. No word on condition or identity.
Police were on the scene for several hours. Not long after the shooting, there was a car accident at the corner of Springfield Avenue and Neil Street. Officials say the incidents are connected.
Witnesses say a car was speeding east on Springfield and looked like it was going to turn right on Neil. Instead, it drove diagonally and crashed into several other cars. The driver then allegedly ran from the scene.
Police searched for the driver for about an hour, shutting down the northbound lanes of Neil, from Green to Springfield during the search. Witnesses say it didn’t look like anyone was seriously hurt in the accident, but it’s not something they see everyday.
“I saw the car coming and it was going really fast and I heard a really loud crash so I ran to the window and I saw that happen and I was just like super astounded. I’ve seen one accident before, but it was just a fender bender and nothing serious but this was pretty crazy,” says Ben Mitchell, who works nearby.
At this time, there’s no word if police caught the person who ran, or exactly how the incidents are connected.
