Destination Illinois: Peoria Riverfront

Destination Illinois

PEORIA, Ill. — Bring your imagination and sense of adventure to the Peoria Riverfront Museum this summer for the new exhibit, Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids: Mythic Creatures.

If you’re interested in creatures and history that really exist, the museum has all kinds of interactive exhibits.

“About the fossils from Illinois, the insects. So there is something for everyone,” says VP of Programs Renae Kerrigan. “If you want to learn about science, art, history, achievement. We have a little bit of it all here at the museum.”

You can catch a flick on the biggest movie screen outside of Chicago and reach for the stars without leaving the comfort of the museum.

“We have a Dome Planetarium, which has immersive shows about space and astronomy. A night sky unlike any other,” Kerrigan says.

The Street showcases more than 300 years of Peoria history including brewing and distilling, and of course, Caterpillar.

Speaking of which, you can learn about all thing CAT at the Doug Oberhelman Caterpillar Visitors Center next door. You can climb on the equipment, design your own machine and try a simulator.

You can take a relaxing ride on The Spirit of Peoria. It’s the only authentic paddleboat on the Illinois River. On the 90 minute sight-seeing cruise you can check out the Peoria skyline, bluffs and river traffic… plus see and learn some very interesting things.

“We have a river laureate Brian ‘Fox” Ellis who is a historian and talks about the river history,” says Alex Grieves who is the Captain of Spirit of Peoria. “We also see the infamous Asian Carp. We call them Illinois freshwater dolphins because they put on quite a show for us.”
