BISMARCK, Ill. (WCIA) — A former church was destroyed after a fire burned it to the ground Monday evening.
Flames engulfed the Walnut Corner Church near Bismarck around 5:00 p.m. Crews spent hours putting it out. The building collapsed as fire fighters continued to put out the flames.
Officials are still investigating what started it, but the fire chief believes a lightning strike ignited it, and doesn’t think it was started on purpose.
No one was hurt, but people who have family history there said it was emotionally painful to watch it burn.
Stacy and David Nicholson were married there 20 years ago, and so were several of their family members.
“Two years ago this coming October was the last wedding that took place in the church and that was our oldest daughter,” said Stacy. “Ashton and her and her husband Scott got married there.”
The church didn’t have an active congregation. No one was inside when the fire started.
