DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The Macon County community continues to respond with shock and mourning to a shooting that left two Decatur police officers hurt Wednesday morning.

Community members organized a prayer vigil on Wednesday evening at the Decatur Police Department. “I was an auxiliary officer with Decatur police for 11 years, so I know a lot of these people, and I know their families,” Starla Street said.

“We wanted to show our support for law enforcement and show our support for DPD families and all families involved,” she said.

In a recent Facebook post, Decatur Police Department offered prayers and condolences to the families of the officers involved in the shooting.

Additionally, area lawmakers have responded to the incident, many focusing on supporting the police department.

State Rep. Sue Scherer (D-Decatur) expressed her reaction.

“It’s just heartbreaking,” Scherer said.

Upon hearing of the shooting, Amber Oberheim also reacted to the situation.

Her husband, Officer Chris Oberheim, was killed in the line of duty in Champaign last year. He began his career with the Decatur Police Department.
