BEMENT — Someone from Our Town is making a name for himself in the major leagues. You won’t see him on the field during St. Louis Cardinals games, but if you keep an eye out between innings, you might find Todd Thomas doing things he learned while growing up.
Thomas may not be part of the St. Louis starting lineup. But if you’re in town for a game, he’ll be there. He’s sometimes better known as “that one guy.” For the last 20 years, he’s been the in-game emcee for the Cardinals.
“I absolutely love making people laugh and entertainment and I’m pretty quick witted on the microphone,” said Thomas. “I’ve been doing it all my life, but now I’m getting paid to do it.”
Thomas says growing up in Bement helped shape his future as a Cardinals fan, funny man and everything in between.
“When you live in a small town like that, you get to do anything you want to do,” said Thomas. “There’s no trying out for sports. If you want to do something, you are asked to do it or get to do it.”
He has lots of good memories of his hometown.
“When I was in sixth and seventh grade, the stuff I’m doing now that I’m getting paid for, I was getting detentions for,” said Thomas. “That’s what’s so amazing that I was able to turn something I was really good at, that is a part of who I am, to turn that into my lifestyle and making a living for my family.”
Thomas says being from a small town shouldn’t keep people from big goals.
“Just follow your dreams,” said Thomas. “If you can think it, you can do it.”
Thomas is also a DJ and he’ll be mixing up some tunes for our live show.
The WCIA 3 crew will be at the park in Bement on Friday. That starts at 4 pm with CiLiving. Then we’ll be live at 5 pm and through our hour-long 6 pm newscast.
