DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — State Representative Sue Scherer (D) is busy working on behalf of the military and those in the workforce. Her office announced two events she’s hosting.
First, Rep. Scherer is collecting cellphones for soldiers during the month of July.
“Cell Phones for Soldiers is a great program that helps boost morale for our men and women currently fighting overseas for our freedoms by providing them the gift of communication with their loved ones,” said Scherer. “By recycling old cell phones and tablets, Cell Phones for Soldiers is able to provide deployed troops with free phone calls to their families. Donating our old cell phones that we no longer use is just one small way that we can support our troops that are sacrificing so much to help protect our nation.”
Cell Phones for Soldiers uses donations to provide cost-free communication to active-duty military members and veterans, and also helps provide emergency grants to soldiers who are transitioning back into civilian life.
For every donated phone valued at $5, Cell Phones for Soldiers is able to provide two-and-a-half hours of free talk time to deployed troops.
